In the UK, aside from a few notable exceptions, all firearms have to be held on licence, either with a five-year firearm certificate or a shotgun certificate. In order to obtain these certificates, police must be satisfied that the applicant has good reason to own each weapon and that they pose no danger to public safety or to the peace.
Interestingly, the UK has some of the strictest gun control legislation in the world, covering not just gun ownership but gun destruction, as well.
There are many reasons why someone might choose to have their gun destroyed, whether that’s to ensure that they aren’t acquired and distributed by criminal networks somehow, because they’ve been inherited from a relative and aren’t wanted, or even because they’ve just been stored in the attic and completely forgotten about.
Destroying guns and ammunition gives people the chance to dispose of these items legally and, perhaps more importantly, in a safe and responsible manner.
What does Bell Bros gun destruction involve?
When you bring your weapons to Bell Bros for destruction, you can rest assured that we will take our responsibilities very seriously, ensuring that your firearms are disposed of following the proper legal channels.
1. The first step you need to take is to book the gun (or guns) into the Register with us and, from there, we can help you with how to go about informing the police.
2. Once this has all been taken care of, we then take the weapons to our workshop where we get to work, angle grinding all the components that hold tolerance and make up the C.I.P Proof structure of the gun. This is done to ensure that the gun is completely unusable for members of the general public.
3. The work includes destruction of all action components and essential working parts, including the chambers and the barrels, as well as all working action components in line with the latest Home Office guidance.
4. Photographs are then taken and the police informed that the work has been carried out, including individual photographs of all destroyed components (including serial numbers).
5. From there, we wait until we receive police approval of the destructive work and then recycle all associated materials.
Our destruction fees are set as:
- £85 for shotguns (exc. VAT)
- £100 for rifles (exc. VAT)
